Bar chart of estimated GTA 6 digital pre-orders versus a Modern Warfare 2 baseline, with a 74 percent PlayStation and 26 percent Xbox split, a 148 percent lead and a Not Official Sales stamp

GTA 6 pre-orders have passed 6 million digital copies, according to new estimates from analytics firm Sensor Tower. The figures, reported by GamesIndustry.biz on October 20, put the game 148% ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at the same point before launch. With 27 days left on the GTA 6 countdown timer, this is the clearest outside look yet at how much demand has built up. It is also easy to misread, so here is what the data does and does not say.

Quick facts: Estimated digital pre-orders: about 6.08 million (as of Oct 13). Estimated spend: about $594 million. Split: 74% PlayStation, 26% Xbox. Lead over Modern Warfare 2: 148%. Source: Sensor Tower estimates, not official sales. Rockstar and Take-Two have not confirmed any of it.

What Sensor Tower Estimates for GTA 6 Pre-Orders

Sensor Tower tracks digital storefront activity and models it into unit and revenue estimates. Its latest snapshot for GTA 6, dated October 13, comes to roughly 6.08 million digital pre-orders and about $594 million in spend. That works out to nearly $98 per copy, which fits a mix dominated by the $99.99 Ultimate Edition rather than the $79.99 standard edition.

Wccftech, which reported the figures on October 20, broke the platform split down further:

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are the only platforms with a confirmed launch. Our release date guide tracks what Rockstar has actually announced.

The 148% Lead Over Modern Warfare 2, Explained

The headline comparison is against Modern Warfare 2 (2022), which Sensor Tower treats as the strongest performer among the big releases it tracks. Measured at equivalent points before launch, GTA 6 is 148% ahead of it. In plain terms, GTA 6 has about two and a half times the pre-orders. Reports on the data say Diablo IV, Hogwarts Legacy and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 all trail Modern Warfare 2 in the same comparison, and one outlet adds that Modern Warfare 2 had more than double Diablo IV’s pre-orders 45 days out.

That ranking is useful context. It shows how the number compares with other big launches that Sensor Tower tracks, but it is a benchmark, not a prediction of final sales.

A scope question the reports do not agree on

Outlets describe the data differently. New Game Network and others say the 6.08 million figure covers US digital pre-orders only. Wccftech describes the worldwide total as just over 6 million, net of returns, and says the historical comparison with other games is US-only. We could not read the underlying GamesIndustry.biz report directly, so we cannot settle that. What every version agrees on is that physical copies are excluded and that the numbers are estimates.

A Newer Tracker Number Is Circulating

Several smaller outlets published a higher figure on October 20 and 21: about 6.45 million digital pre-orders and roughly $630 million, with 4.80 million on PS5 and 1.66 million on Xbox. They attribute it to Sensor Tower’s live GTA VI tracker. We have not found that update in a primary or major-outlet report, so treat it as reported but not independently confirmed. It also appears to use a different scope from the October 13 snapshot, so the two numbers should not be subtracted from each other.

How This Fits With Earlier Data

This is not Sensor Tower’s first reading. The firm’s earlier estimates, covered in our press previews report, counted about 4.38 million tracked pre-orders as of August 19. It later estimated a surge around the Netflix event, which we covered in our report on the Extended Look and Rockstar’s no-microtransactions statement, and our Extended Look viewership report noted its estimate that about 89% of early buyers chose the Ultimate Edition.

The direction is consistent: the tracked total has kept climbing since August. Because tracker scope may have changed between snapshots, the exact gain is less reliable than the trend.

What Counts as Confirmed

Keeping the layers separate helps here.

Why the GTA 6 Pre-Order Numbers Matter

Pre-orders are a demand signal, not revenue. Estimated spend counts what buyers committed at checkout, not what Take-Two books, and it excludes boxed copies and any markets the tracker does not cover. Early commitments can also be cancelled or refunded before launch.

Still, the strength of the Ultimate Edition share is the part that stands out. Premium editions typically take a small share of pre-orders, and a mix this heavy lifts the average order close to $100. For the wider picture, see our analyst sales projection report, where Piper Sandler estimated about 48 million launch units. Those are separate forecasts built on different methods, and neither is an official target.

Rockstar and Take-Two are the next checkpoint

Take-Two reports second-quarter fiscal 2027 results on Monday, November 9, after the US market closes, with a call at 4:30 p.m. Eastern, according to the company’s announcement as reported by GTABoom. It is the last earnings report before launch, and the company’s tone on pre-orders will be closely watched. In August, CEO Strauss Zelnick called the response “unprecedented” but said the company would not claim victory until sales happen, as we covered in our pricing and pre-orders report. No one has said Take-Two will publish pre-order figures on the call.

The Bottom Line on GTA 6 Pre-Orders

GTA 6 pre-orders are running far ahead of the biggest recent launches, by Sensor Tower’s estimate, with about 6.08 million digital copies as of October 13 and a heavy lean toward the $99.99 Ultimate Edition. These are third-party estimates with an unresolved scope question, not sales figures. The next official word is likely to come from Take-Two on November 9, and we will update this page when it does.
